DC’s Suicide Squad Rumors Pouring In

Lots of Suicide Squad news has poured in this past week.  For the uninitiated, Suicide Squad is DC comics movie set to be released in theaters August 5, 2016.  As a quick summary, wikipedia describes the Suicide Squad as  an antihero team of incarcerated supervillians who act as deniable assets for the United States government, undertaking high-risk black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. The group operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, under the directorship of Dr. Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).”  The make up of the group has changed over the years in the comics, but the characters announced for the movie line-up are Blockbuster (who has super strength), Multiplex (who can replicate himself), Jaculi (super speed), Mindboggler (a telepath), Harkness (aka Captain Boomerang played by Jai Courtney and who specializes in throwing weapons), Vixen (animal abilities) and Deadshot (Will Smith) who is an expert marksman.

While it appears that the movie will focus on the team, other characters are reportedly in the film in some capacity.  They include the Joker (Jared Leto), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), Hugo Strange and Deathstroke.  Umberto Gonzalez over at Latino Review had the following to say about ow the Joker and Deathstroke will be utilized in the film.

Leto’s Joker is most definitely based on THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS version. He’s lean & scarred but his suit does have broad shoulders. Joker works out in his cell like an inmate when he is interrogated by Amanda Waller. He’s doing hand stand push ups so it makes sense that Jared Leto said he is putting on weight. He’s definitely not skinny, but in fact more muscular. He has bleached skin not make up. #SPOILER – He’s killed one of Batman’s sidekicks, there is a lot of references to his past crimes. He kills a lot of people. HUGE #RUMOR – I’m also told The Joker has a lot of scenes with HUGO STRANGE! He’s the psychiatrist at the prison & seems to be a part of the story yet I heard nothing of casting or mention of a single casting choice. Hugo Strange has quite a few interactions with the Joker & Harley Quinn. It’s not the regular security. It’s internal one on one thing.”  The Joker is naturally a fan favorite so it comes as little surprise that Warner Brothers would try to give him as much screen time as possible, even if he’s not going to be featured as an actual villain for Batman and co. until future installments.  Jared Leto has huge shoes to fill as Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker is still fresh on everyone’s mind.  This is the first indication of Hugo Strange being in the movie, however.  While I’m excited to see him and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn on film, I’m afraid the film is feeling over-crowded.  Still, with the cast they’re assembling I am certainly more intrigued at the potential for this Suicide Squad movie than I was when it was first announced.

Gonzalez went on to provide the following tidbits on Deathstroke in the film.  “Deathstroke works with/for #ONSLAUGHT & does their dirty work. He’s a hired assassin and he doesn’t have any powers like in the comic book. They’re going for a pre-super villain Deathstroke. He’s a huge part of both of the major set pieces of the film. His introduction is INSANE! He’s bada** & almost takes the team down on one mission single-handed. Deathstroke has THE breakout & choicest role in the film. The running gun battle that sources are describing is something else. His suit is very stealth oriented. They used an actual US military tactical outfit for the basis. He’s armed to the teeth, uses a sword and automatics. In concept artwork he has two eyes. The mask is there and it’s the iconic one.”

Deathstroke has always been one of my favorite villains in the comics.  He’s like if Batman were a bad guy, able to defeat anybody simply due to strategy and will.  Lots of actors have had to turn down the role of Deathstroke due to scheduling conflicts.  One of the early candidates was Joe Manganiello (True Blood) who has now recently dropped out of Ryan Murphy’s “Scream Queens.”  Does this mean that Suicide Squad may soon be able to name their Deathstroke?  There’s lots of news still to come as DC is attempting to build up their brand to rival Marvel’s film juggernaut.  Thanks for reading.
