It feels like not too long ago that I was writing about Disney optioning to adapt Dumbo into a live action movie. At the time I said it was a move that made sense since Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent and Cinderella all did well at the box office. Even though they already have Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast and Dumbo in the works (and there were rumors of a Little Mermaid that could be directed by Sofia Coppola) reports broke yesterday that a live action version of Mulan could be next.
According to Screen Rant, this isn’t the first time that Disney attempted to develop a live action re-imaging of their classic film. Five years ago they had plans to remake Mulan with Zhang Ziyi (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) set to star. That ultimately did not work out, but with their recent success at retellings of their classic film library, it appears that they want another shot at it.
An article on The Hollywood Reporter site states that Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin have written a screenplay for the film. There is no word on who could potentially star or direct the project and I have not heard of when the Mouse House is hoping to release the picture. Even though the adaptation won’t be a musical, I can’t help but include the video below. You know you’re going to sing along. Thanks for reading.
