Two days ago director David Ayer tweeted the above picture of the cast for Suicide Squad. Many of these actors have previously been announced but there are some new faces in the crowd. Pictured above from left to right, top row David Ayer, Joel Kinnaman (playing Rick Flag), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and previously unannounced Adam Beach, Jim Parrack and Ike Barinholtz. Soon following the tweet, Latino Review’s El Mayimbe posted the following about the role each actor will be playing:
- Jim Parrack landed the part of Deathstroke, despite his True Blood co-star Joe Manganiello being heavily rumored for the role. At 6’4″ Parrack would have been an obvious choice for a physically-imposing figure, but a part as DC’s deadliest mercenary is certainly his most high-profile to date.
- Ike Barinholtz, known for comedic roles, is rumored to be playing Dr. Hugo Strange. Previous rumors suggested Strange would be working as a psychiatrist (of sorts) for the more eccentric members of Amanda Waller’s Task Force X. Primarily that role would deal with both Harley Quinn and Joker – and given the rumored cause for their distanced relationship, Strange could be worked into Batman‘s movie realm in the future.
- Adam Beach is rumored to be playing Ravan, a comic book villain tied to The Onslaught – the Squad’s regular opposition in the comics (and film). Though not as well known as other villains, adding one more name and face to the roster is always welcome.
The most interesting note in the casting above is that Joe Manganiello did not get the part of Deathstroke. All early indications were that he was a lock for the role, one that is sure to be a fan favorite based on what I’ve heard so far about his presence in the movie. Another thing to point out is that Jared Leto was not present in the photo above and it’s already been confirmed that he will be playing the Joker in Suicide Squad. Then yesterday David Ayer posted the following picture of Jared Leto copying the famous “The Killing Joke” Batman cover.
David Ayer has previously stated that the Joker that appears in Suicide Squad, and the other DC movies, will exhibit and oversized smile, bleached skin and scarring (you can visit Screen Rant for further details), so the picture posted is likely more of a tease than any indication of what he might look like in the film.
This is shaping up to be an exciting movie. I’ll admit that when I first heard they were making a Suicide Squad film I had my doubts and questioned why when they have so many superhero characters that they could build films around. However, after seeing the talent they’ve brought on board and seeing how this film is being used to introduce us to many of the villains that populate the DC movie universe, it makes perfect sense and has become one of my more anticipated films of 2016. Suicide Squad is set to hit theater August 5, 2016. Thanks for reading.
