Promotion for Ridley Scott’s The Martian has kicked in with the first photos released this week as well as interviews with the director and cast.
“The Martian is based on the novel of the same name (written by Andy Weir) and stars Damon as Mark Watney, an astronaut who is serving as part of a mission to Mars when a storm hits and he winds up separated from his crew – and, eventually, left by himself on the planet after being presumed dead by his fellow space explorers.”
If the premise of Matt Damon as an astronaut abandoned on a planet struggling to survive sounds familiar, the inclusion of one of his Interstellar co-stars, Jessica Chastain, will certainly cause people to compare the two films. Based on her interview with People, it was seeing her co-stars in Interstellar pretending to be astronauts that made her “jump at the chance” to play a space traveller as well. She spoke about some of the prep for The Martian, where they went to Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California to visit Mars by means of virtual reality.
“Through Interstellar and watching the fun that Anne [Hathaway] and Matt [Damon] had playing astronauts, I thought I really want to do that”
“I got to see all the maps of Mars, and participate in an 3D virtual reality perspective. It was incredible, as soon as I put the glasses on, I felt like I was really there on Mars. Whether I looked left or right, it felt like I was there with actual images all around me. It was a fantastic way to imagine what it would be like to be on that planet.”
Much of the film’s running time is expected to feature Matt Damon’s character isolated on Mars and struggling to stay alive facing less than ideal circumstances. In the same People article Director Ridley Scott reiterated that, “frankly he’s got 28 days to live – and that’s if everything goes well for him. [So] instead of him collapsing into terror – He knuckles down and actually starts to work out” how long he can survive.
The cast for the movie also includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, and Michael Peña. The Martian opens in theaters November 25.
