Tilda Swinton In Talks For Doctor Strange

Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) is on her way to joining the Marvel cinematic universe.  Although Doctor Strange is set to hit theaters in 2016 and will begin filming in November of this year, not much progress has been made on the casting front.  Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) will star as the title character and Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us From Evil) will direct but apart from that we’ve only heard rumors of Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) possibly being attached as constant names thrown around for the Ancient One.  Names like Ken Watanabe, Morgan Freeman and Bill Nighy have all been rumored to be options for the Ancient One in prior weeks, so this comes as big surprise to hear that Tilda Swinton is now in negotiations for the role.

In the comics, The Ancient One is a Tibetan man who obtained the title Sorcerer Supreme, which according to the Marvel Comics Database is a title given to the “practitioner of the mystic or magic arts who has greater skills than all others or commands a greater portion of the ambient magical energies than any other organism on a given world or dimension.”  He’s lived for over 500 years and is a mentor to Doctor Stephen Strange, an egotistical neurosurgeon who damaged his hands in a car accident and seeks out a way to restore his hands.  To the keen observer, Tilda Swinton is neither Tibetan, a man, or even particularly ancient.  She is however a talented actress who has been known to take on extremely different roles throughout her career.

Do you like the idea of casting Swinton as The Ancient One in Doctor Strange?  Who would be your choice to fill out the rest of the cast, presumably Baron Mordo, Clea, Wong, Dormammu, etc.?  Doctor Strange is set to hit theaters November 4, 2016.
