Disney Announced Cruelle De Vil Live Action Movie

More live action adaptations from Disney.  The mouse house has been all in recently with the adaptations of their classic animation catalog into live action films.  We’ve already seen live action versions of Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella with Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast already in production.  Beyond that there has been announcements for Dumbo, Genie (from Aladdin), Prince Charming, Winnie the Pooh, Sword in the Stone,  Mulan, Pinocchio, Night on Bald Mountain, and I’m sure there are a few more I’m forgetting.  You can add one more to the list because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Disney has greenlit a Cruella De Vil film.

Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr Banks, Fifty Shades of Grey) will be writing the screenplay along with Steve Zissis (Togetherness).  THR had the following to say about the project:

“Aline Brosh McKenna worked on an early version of the script for Cruella, produced by Andrew Gunn (Sky High, Bedtime Stories).

De Vil first appeared in Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians but became a Disney icon with the 1961 animated movie. And it’s not the character’s first incarnation in a live-action feature. Glenn Close played the character in 1996’s 101 Dalmatians and the 2000 sequel,102 Dalmatians.”

The 101 Dalmatians live action movie weren’t that long ago, so it can be presumed that a remake would focus more on the backstory of Cruella.  They did not provide a release date for the film, so it is not apparent whether this movie is one of the films Disney has listed as “Untitled Disney Fairy Tale” on the release schedule announced yesterday.  You can check out that full schedule, including Disney, Marvel and Pixar films through 2020, here.  What do you think about Disney working on another 101 Dalmatians movie?
