Some quick remarks on entertainment news stories that broke the past few days:
First up, 20th Century Fox and New Regency have released two new posters for The Revenant featuring stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. There’s not much beyond a close up of their faces out in the cold, but you can check them out below.
Inspired by true events, The Revenant is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.
Two bits of casting news for superhero flicks: Michael Stuhlbarg (Boardwalk Empire, A Serious Man) has joined the cast for Marvel’s Doctor Strange as the villain known as Nicodemus West. Here’s a description of the character’s arc throughout his run in the comics courtesy of Latino Review:
“The character Stuhlbarg will play in the comics was once a “good guy,” at least he had the makings to be that. Much like Stephen Strange, West was trained by the ancient one and given some truly potent mystical abilities, and he even wanted to use his abilities to help save people and cure any and all illnesses known to man. But, after using his powers to save someone’s life and accidentally having them killed, he took a much darker path.”
Doctor Strange is assembling quite the cast before shooting begins later this month. In addition to Stuhlbarg and Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role Strange will also consist of Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton and Mads Mikkelsen. Doctor Strange will arrive in US theaters November 4th, 2016.
The other bit of casting news is related to the DC universe. The Wrap is reporting that Nicole Kidman (Moulin Rouge, The Others ) is in negotiations to play a high-ranking Amazonian warrior in the upcoming Wonder Woman stand alone film. While it has not been confirmed exactly who she will be playing, in the comics the Queen of the Amazons is Hyppolyta, who is also Diana/Wonder Woman’s mother. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear any additional information regarding this potential casting story.
