The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Universal is eyeing Angelina Jolie to star in their remake of the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein. According to the article it is believed that Universal backed By the Sea, a passion project for Angelina Jolie who wrote, directed and starred in the film with her husband Brad Pitt, as a “favor” movie in hopes that it would continue their relationship with the star and convince her to headline their remake of Bride of Frankenstein. Here’s what Coming Soon had to say about the project:
“First announced in 2009, the Bride redo was being developed as a directing vehicle for Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent), to be produced by Brian Grazer and and Sean Daniel with a screenplay by Burger and Dirk Wittenborn (The Lucky Ones). Although the article states Grazer is still the active producer, there’s no confirmation one way or the other about Burger’s involvement, although he certainly has more clout than he did in ’09. There is also no mention of whether Bride of Frankenstein would be integrated into the shared cinematic Monster Universe that Universal is developing under writers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan.”
There is no release date set for the Bride of Frankenstein remake. It is not known at this time if the movie will be included as part of Universal’s Shared Monster Universe (similar to Marvel’s shared universe) or if it would be a stand alone feature. Universal intends to make a combined cinematic universe that will include all of their classic movie monsters which will start with The Mummy and also include Dracula, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man and the vampire hunter Van Helsing. Universal is also looking to remake The Creature From the Black Lagoon with Scarlett Johansson although it is unknown whether that film will be included as part of this shared universe either. I will keep you posted as soon as I learn any additional information about this project.
