When LEGO Movie opened in 2014, nobody expected a film about the popular linking blocks would go on to be such a huge critical and commercial hit. In addition to the creative storytelling and self-aware humor, one of the big contributing factors to this success was the Will Arnett’s portrayal of Batman. Here Batman was a parody of himself, depicting a brooding, brutal, comically serious and macho version of the character that became a fan favorite. A spinoff solo outing featuring the LEGO Batman is set to arrive in theaters February 19, 2017 and now we have a synopsis and the first few images from that film.
Director Chris McKay (Robot Chicken) had the following to say about LEGO Batman courtesy of Screen Rant:
“Batman is an island onto himself, the only thing he doesn’t have is relationships. We’re making ‘About a Boy’ as directed by (action director) Michael Mann.”
“We’re nothing but exhaustive about the cameos and other characters that try to enter Batman’s life.”
LEGO Batman’s feature outing [will] continue deeper into that satirical take; presenting the character as a brooding bore too clueless to acknowledge how lonely he is — until his world is “up-ended” by the arrival of Robin and Batgirl. Michael Cera is voicing Robin (Dick Grayson version) and Rosario Dawson is Batgirl, while Ralph Fiennes voices Alfred and Zach Galifianakis has been cast as LEGO Joker. Further cameos from the rest of the LEGO DC Universe are to be expected as well.
It’s certainly possible that LEGO Movie was catching lightning in a bottle and it will be difficult to recreate the fun of the original film. If there’s a character from that movie that is able to support a whole film centered on him, it would be Batman. Fingers crossed that this is even half as good as LEGO.
