After the surprise success of Kingsman: The Secret Service it was only a matter of time before a sequel would be arriving in theaters. It was since announced that Taron Egerton and Mark String would return, joined by Halle Berry and Julianne Moore. Below check out the first plot details and concept artwork for the second film.
The following description comes from Empire Magazine (via Screen Rant).
“The official subtitle for the Kingsman sequel is revealed in the latest edition of Empire Magazine (hat tip to CBM), which also reveals plots details and concept art for the movie (note: we will post official versions of that art once they’ve been released online). One of the pieces of artwork shows that the Kingsman headquarters in England winds up being destroyed; that may be the event that sets in motion Golden Circle‘s “international story,” as Egerton has called it. Either way, Empire reports that Eggsy and Merlin soon make their way over to the U.S. to work with the Statesmen: a U.S.-based secret organization (with headquarters that are disguised as a whiskey distillery), led by a woman named Ginger (Halle Berry) and a “swaggering, sharpshooting cowboy” known as Jack (casting TBA).
In addition, Empire has Golden Circle artwork that features a “Kingsman cab” that (in fitting old-school James Bond style) can travel underway like a submarine, as well as an image that shows Poppyland: the lair of the film’s villain, Poppy (Julianne Moore), and a place that looks like a 1950s diner surrounded by ancient temple ruins in some as-yet unidentified jungle.”
The good news is that Matthew Vaughn will be back to direct the sequel. Vaughn is one of those directors that has a knack for making movies better than they appear on paper, but hasn’t been involved in the sequel to his films int he past. He has films like X-Men First Class and Kick A** under his belt as well as other under the radar movies like Layer Cake and Stardust. It’s great to see him back, and he explained to Empire why the announcement was not guaranteed.
“I didn’t know if I wanted to direct this or not. I was worried about the villain. Spy films are only as good as their villains. Then one morning I woke up with the whole storyline in place, and a new villain plot.”
As for whether he intends to try and recreate that awesome church sequence from The Secret Service, he added,
“You try not to read what people want, but they do want another church sequence. I have no reason for another massacre to happen. But I have other sequences you’ve never seen before.”
That will apparently include a skiing sequence, a barroom brawl, robot dogs, one-armed henchmen, and the heroes being attacked by what Vaughn calls,
“a massive f***ing frankfurter.”
