Surprisingly it’s been a while since the last report of a Disney animated classic being remade into a live action film. There was a stretch where it seemed like every other week there was a new film in the works including (but likely not limited to) Beauty and the Beast , Dumbo, Genie (from Aladdin),Prince Charming, Winnie the Pooh, Sword in the Stone, Mulan,Pinocchio, Night on Bald Mountain and Cruella (101 Dalmatians). That list is in addition to the previously released Alice in Wonderland (and this year’s sequel), Maleficent, Cinderella and Jungle Book coming out next month. A new title has joined the list based on the classic tale of Snow White. Read on below for more details.
When looking at the list of titles being adapted as live action features there was one glaring omission, Snow White. Part of that could be attributed to the fact that two other Snow White live action adaptations recently found their way to the big screen, Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror (neither produced by Disney). Now they’ve decided to move ahead with a film based on the classic fairy tale, but looking at the events from a different perspective.
According to The Hollywood Reporter the film will be called Rose Red and instead of Snow White the movie will follow Snow White’s sister. The character Rose Red exists in literature, but not as Snow White’s sister. THR explains how the character is being worked into the story.
“Rose Red is a character that appeared in Grimms’ fairy tales in an adventure that had no relation to the more well-known Snow White and the Seven Dwarves fairy tale that inspired the classic Disney animated film.
Merz’s Red was initially written as a stand-alone feature, but then Daugherty came up with a new take that made the story closer to the animated classic, giving Rose a “companion piece” feel.
The story is a revisionist take that transposes Rose Red into theSnow White tale, making her a key player in the later part of the classic story. When Snow White takes a bite from the iconic poison apple and falls into her Sleeping Death, her estranged sister, Rose Red, must undertake a dangerous quest with Grumpy and the other dwarves to find a way to break the curse and bring Snow White back to life.”
What do you think about this take on the story of Snow White? Maleficent was a huge hit and that film followed a character who wasn’t the main character of the Sleeping Beauty story. Still that was someone who was actually in the Sleeping Beauty tale and this will be looking at the well known Snow White story through the eyes of someone the audience never heard of before. I respect the fact that Disney is trying to go about some of these movies in a new way, but I’m not so sure they’ll get the same commercial success they’re expecting. I’ll keep you posted on any new information I hear about this project.
