According to The Tracking Board (via Screen Rant), Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and writer/director Alex Garland (Ex Machina) will be teaming back up for a sci-fi thriller, Annihilation. The script will be adapted by Garland from the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. The movie will also feature Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriquez. Read on below for a synopsis.
Here’s the plot synopsis per Screen Rant:
“The story focuses on a biologist who, in a bid to discover the truth behind the disappearance of her husband, volunteers for a mysterious journey into an area sealed off as an environmental disaster. Alone in the wilderness, the biologist soon discovers that something dark and inexplicable is there with her. In addition to Isaac, Annihilation will also star Natalie Portman (Jane Got A Gun), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Tessa Thompson (Creed), and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin).”
Annihilation is part of a a series of novels referred to as the Southern Reach trilogy. It’s not apparent whether this film is intended to start a franchise or whether it will just be a stand alone feature. Perhaps that will be dependent on the success of the first movie. With the talent on board in front of and behind the camera, this is a project I will be keeping my eye on. I have made known my love for Oscar Isaac as a rising star in Hollywood and I’m pulling for this to be another quality film on his resume. I’ll keep you posted on any additional information about this project.
