Jessica Henwick Joins Marvel/Netflix’s Iron Fist

This past week I finally got around to watching season 2 of Daredevil (almost finished) and the Netflix/Marvel marriage continues to knock out successes.  I’m looking forward to Luke Cage later this year and Iron Fist, whenever the release date for that ends up being.  This weekend they dropped more news about the casting for Luke Cage and it’s another Game of Thrones cast member, Jessica Henwick.

Henwick plays Nymeria Sand, one of Oberyn Martell’s daughters known as the Sand Snakes, in season 5 of Game of Thrones.  She also played Jess Testor, a rebel pilot in Star Wars The Force Awakens.  She will join previously announced Finn Jones (Danny Rand/Iron Fist) as Game of Thrones alumni making the leap to Netflix’s Iron Fist series.  So who will she be playing; Colleen Wing.  Here’s a description of the character in the comic courtesy of Coming Soon.

“Colleen Wing made her first comic book appearance in 1974’s “Marvel Premiere” #19. Raised in Japan by her grandfather, Colleen Wing trained as a samurai. As an adult, Wing moved to New York City where her father, Professor Lee Wing, worked at Columbia University. When his Oriental studies led to the professor being targeted by the deadly Cult of Kara Kai, both Wings crossed paths with Iron Fist for the first time. It was soon thereafter that Colleen Wing’s life was saved by Misty Knight. Becoming best friends the pair formed a private detective agency, Knightwing Restorations, Ltd. Thanks to a moniker from Rand, however, Knight and Wing soon became better known as the “Daughters of the Dragon.”

The following statements were added by Executive Producer and Showrunner Scott Buck and Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb:

“I’m very excited to have Jessica as our Colleen Wing,” says Scott Buck. “She’s shown us that she can bring both a sense of quiet strength as well as an engaging vulnerability to the character.”

“Jessica brings both a youthful vitality mixed with a strong sense of authority crucial to the character,” adds Jeph Loeb. “And as anyone who’s seen her in ‘Game of Thrones’ can attest, she can throw down with the best of them, making her the perfect Colleen Wing.”

What do you think about the casting thus far?  Are you anticipating Netflix’s fourth original series?  You can read more about the history of this production including Scott Buck being added as showrunner, the casting of Finn Jones and the struggle to get this series off the ground.  I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear any additional news about Iron Fist.
