According to Deadline, Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) and Kristofer Hivju (Game of Thrones) will be appearing in the latest installment in the Fast and Furious Franchise, Fast 8. See below for the announcement from Deadline.
Universal Pictures has closed Charlize Theron to star in Fast 8, which director F. Gary Gray and producer Neal Moritz move into production next month for release on April 14, 2017. Theron, who’s coming off a memorable action turn in Mad Max: Fury Road, will play a new character in the blockbuster franchise. She’ll join returning stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and the rest of the gang. Chris Morgan wrote the script.”
I’ll admit that I never imagines that the Fast and the Furious franchise would reach the heights it has. The first film started out as an entertaining enough B-movie that was followed shortly by sequels that successively lost the 2 main stars. The movies were known for having a joke of a plot and being merely an excuse to watch cool car races. Now they’ve become credible (albeit ridiculously over the top) action movies that are putting up huge box office numbers (Furious 7 made $1.5 billion worldwide and currently sits as the 6th highest grossing movie of all time).
One of the contributing factors to the increase in popularity is adding major stars to the cast with each installment. A-list stars like Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Kurt Russell have been added in the last few movies and now an Oscar-winning star is joining the fray with Charlize Theron officially signing on the dotted line. Theron is no stranger to action films with movies like Aeon Flux, Italian Job and last year’s Mad Max under her belt (the last two consisting of vehicular action as well). I don’t expect her to add an element of respectability to the movies moving forward because thus far the franchise’s bread and butter has been embracing the outlandishness of the events, creating over the top characters and stunts. However, Theron is an acclaimed actress who is exceptionally talented and lovely and should be able to seamlessly walk into this world. This movie is expected to kick off a new trilogy of films, culminating in the 10th and final movie in the franchise (although a spinoff and prequel have been rumored as well).
What do you think about the casting of Charlize Theron and Kristofer Hivju in the next Fast and Furious movie? Fast 8 arrives in theaters April 14, 2017.
