Punisher Spinoff Series Officially Ordered By Marvel/Netflix

After his celebrated introduction in season two of Marvel/Netflix’s Daredevil, Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher will be featured in his own stand alone series.  Despite rumors surfacing earlier this year that the popular character might be receiving his own show, Marvel and Netflix just made the official announcement today.  Read on below for more details.

Jon Bernthal will naturally be returning to the role of Frank castle/The Punisher for the series and Hannibal executive producer Steve Lightfoot set to serve as the series’ showrunner.  The following statements are courtesy of Coming Soon.

“We want to thank the fans who are clamoring for more of Jon’s stunning and powerful performance as Frank Castle from ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’” said Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. “Now combined with Showrunner Steve Lightfoot’s compelling writing, we’re thrilled to bring ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ to Netflix.”

“Jon hooked our global audience with his performance as Frank Castle from the moment he stepped on screen in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil,’ and we are looking forward to seeing more of him in this role under the vision of Steve Lightfoot,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix Vice President of Original Content.

“For me, the complexity and unpredictability of Frank Castle make him an incredibly compelling character and I couldn’t be more excited to dive into his world,” said Executive Producer and Showrunner, Steve Lightfoot. “After watching Jon’s performance in ‘Marvel’s Daredevil’ I could not be more excited to be working with him to further develop and progress the story of this anti-hero in a show of his own.”

I have made known my love for the Marvel/Netflix collaborations thus far as both seasons of Daredevil and season 1 of Jessica Jones have been quality offerings on the streaming media service.  Following in their footsteps we’ll be receiving Luke Cage in September, Iron Fist is currently in production and the Defenders mini-series (which will bring all of the characters together) is set to begin production later this year.  Most likely we will not be seeing the Punisher series on Netflix until after the Defenders mini-series, however one has to wonder if he would now be included in that series as well?

Are you excited to see more of Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle dishing out vigilante justice?  I will keep you posted on any new details i hear about this project.  Check out the first official teaser image below.
