It was recently announced that Supergirl was cancelled on CBS and subsequently picked up by the CW to join Arrow, the Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Yesterday Andrew Kreisberg, executive producer and show-runner of the DC CW series, stated that Supergirl/Kara’s more famous cousin Superman/Clark Kent would be making an appearance on the show next season. Here’s the quote from Kreisberg courtesy of Heroic Hollywood.
“Greg [Berlanti], Ali [Adler] and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”
I’m very surprised that we’ll be seeing an actual actor in the role of Clark Kent/Superman on the CW series since DC has gone to great lengths to differentiate between the big screen and small screen. Famously, characters have been killed off of Arrow because DC wanted to use them on the big screen including Deadshot, Amanda Waller, and possibly Black Canary (yet to be seen if that was the reason she got the ax). There was also a plan to have Harley Quinn appear on Arrow, but permission was denied once there was a plan for her to make her debut in Suicide Squad. So even though there are certainly Easter eggs sprinkled throughout the various shows making references to Batman/Bruce Wayne and Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, neither of those characters or the other heroes that are to be included in the Justice League are expected to make actual appearances.
Who would be your pick to plan Clark Kent/Superman on the small screen? Due to continuity issues that would arise, it’s highly unlikely that Tom Welling is an option and they have already made it clear that the film and TV universes are separate so that rules out Henry Cavill as well. Season 2 of Supergirl will come to the CW on Monday nights in October.
