Rebecca Ferguson Joins Hugh Jackman in Greatest Showman on Earth

Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation) joins Hugh Jackman in 20th Century Fox‘s P.T. Barnum musical biopic The Greatest Showman on Earth.

The Greatest Showman on Earth will be directed by Michael Gracey from a screenplay by Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City) and Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Star Wars: The Force Awakens).  The film will be an original musical about the like of P.T. Barnum, specifically focusing on the creation of his three-ring circus and his infatuation with “Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind” (Coming Soon).  The cast also includes Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya.

I’m all for an original musical.  While musicals have certainly been making a comeback in recent years, original musicals have been rare.  Hopefully this movie and La La Land later this year are successful and can help revitalize the genre.  With the cast and release date, Christmas 2017, Fox is certainly aiming for this to be a big hit.  Fingers crossed.

Does this mean Rebecca Ferguson can sing?  There can easily be non-singing parts in a musical, but now I’m curious.  I’ve only seen her in Rogue Nation, but she stole that movie from arguably one of the biggest movie stars ever in Tom Cruise.  She will be appearing in interesting upcoming movies like Girl on the Train and Snowman, she’s the first female character to be brought back for a future Mission Impossible movie, her name was tossed around in rumors for Captain Marvel before Brie Larson was cast in the role, and now she’s involved in a high-profile musical.  She’s fully embracing her “15 minutes of fame” following a breakout performance and could soon be a household name.  I’m a fan after her work in Rogue Nation and have been trying to find a way to watch The White Queen (particularly because period dramas are my wife’s favorite).

Are you interested in seeing an original musical about the life of P.T. Barnum?  What do you think about the casting of Rebecca Ferguson in the movie?  Share your thoughts in the discussion board below.
