James Cameron provides insight about what the new Avatar movies will be about and when we can expect them to arrive in theaters.
James Cameron’s Avatar came out in 2009 and still remains as the highest grossing film of all-time in the worldwide box office. Due to that unparalleled reception, it was a no-brainer that there would be additional stories told on Pandora. However, as the years passed the plan for these sequels has repeatedly changed. As of now it appears as though we will be getting four additional Avatar films with the first one planned for December 2018 (although with as many questions that remain about the script and even the number of movies that are going to be made, it wouldn’t be surprising if this date gets pushed back). What will these sequels focus on and when might we be finally getting a new Avatar movie? The man himself, James Cameron, spoke out and provided the following information (via Coming Soon).
“We’ve got most of the sequel stuff already designed, but I like this idea of weaving back and forth between the two worlds, the live world and the film world.”
“The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake and Neytiri and their children,” he added. “It’s more of a family saga about the struggle with the humans. But thematically, ‘Toruk’ manages to land very very closely to the feeling of where the sequel stories are going.”
As of writing this, the planned release schedule for the Avatar sequels is December 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Is this feasible since Cameron appears to still be ironing out the details? Here’s what he had to say about the initial target date and the sequels to follow.
“We haven’t moved that target yet, but we will if we need to. The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it’s an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we’re able to fulfill on that promise.”
It’s difficult to bet against Cameron at this point since he’s had an excellent track record and his last two movie still remain as the highest grossing films of all-time. That said, while Avatar broke every record and made tons of money and fans it is not impossible to imagine that interest will no longer be there a decade later. One of the big draws of the original was how it pushed the envelope as far as technology and specifically 3D. 3D has become a mainstay in movie blockbusters so that novelty will no longer be there. Then there’s always the question of what is the best timeframe to release a sequel- too quickly and the movie won’t have strong hype, but too long of a wait might cause people to lose interest. Only time will tell whether he’s making the right decision to come out with a sequel after all this time and if having 2-5 come out in rapid succession will remain profitable.
