Joe Manganiello Confirmed as Deathstroke in Batman Movie

Joe Manganiello has been confirmed to be playing Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in a solo Batman movie.

Last week Ben Affleck posted a video on his Twitter account depicting the legendary DC mercenary Deathstroke.  Shortly afterwards he confirmed that Deathstroke would indeed be the main villain in his standalone Batman film (he will be directing, co-writing and starring in the feature that is yet to receive a release date).  It was not revealed who was under the mask, nor was it even stated that whoever was under the mask would be the one to play Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in the future movie, but speculation ran rampant online.  Dream casting lists were posted on most major film sites and information came out that Joe Manganiello (True Blood), the fan favorite for the role, was in London on vacation at the time.

Now the Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Manganiello is indeed playing Deathstroke, and that was the actor under the mask.  That seems to imply that Deathstroke will be in Justice League to some extent since they’re filming that now and it wouldn’t make sense to bring him in to only film a teaser during the middle of a shoot for another movie.  Here’s what they had to say.

“DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johnsconfirmed the casting in his first interview discussing his new role overseeing Warner Bros.’ movies based on DC Comics characters.

He declined to comment on whether Deathstroke has a cameo in “Justice League,” which is currently shooting in London.

Johns also declined to say when the Batman movie will be released, although the earliest it could likely hit theaters is 2018.”

I haven’t seen True Blood or Magic Mike and really only know Spider-Man and cameos on How I Met Your Mother.  Therefore I can’t speak on his acting ability but the guy certainly has the look for the part.  I’m assuming since he has unequivocally been the front-runner for the role in fan forums that his previous work demonstrates he’s the man for the role too.

Now that the casting is out of the way, the next thing for us fans to argue about is what the story should be for the standalone Batman movie.  Ever since it was first rumored that the film would follow the Death In the Family/Under the Red Hood storyline I had my heart set on that.  I think Ben Affleck could really do that justice and it would expand upon a topic referenced in Batman v Superman.  There were also rumors that the movie could all take place within Arkham Asylum (similar to the recent popular games) or could involve Will Smith’s Deadshot and Jared Leto’s Joker.  Here’s Screen Rant‘s thoughts on how the latter could still be a possibility.

“Previous rumors had also suggested that the Batman film could be pulling in a few familiar faces from the DCEU, primarily the Suicide Squad, pitting Batman and Will Smith’s ‘Deadshot’ against Jared Leto’s ‘Joker’ in a bargain. It wouldn’t be much of a stretch to replace that role with Deathstroke, or even add him into the plot on either side of the conflict (he’s a contract killer, after all). And while Suicide Squad was nothing if not divisive, the prospect of Ben Affleck directing Leto, Smith, and Manganiello in a tough-as-nails detective story is something worth paying attention to.”

If you missed it, here’s the teaser that Ben Affleck posted on Twitter.

What do you think?  Are you happy with the announcement that Joe Manganiello will be playing Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in a Batman movie and possibly in Justice League?  What is your dream storyline for how these characters could face off in the movie?  There is no target release date as of yet, but I will keep you posted when any new information is released about the movie.
