Depp, Pfeiffer, Ridley, Pena and Dench Board Murder on the Orient Express

Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Michael Pena and Judi Dench have joined Kenneth Branagh’s remake of Murder on the Orient Express.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the cast for the latest remake for Murder on the Orient Express is beginning to take shape.  Originally there were rumors that Angelina Jolie was in talks for a role in the film before having to back out.  Supposedly Charlize Theron is the front-runner to replace her in the role, but there has been no confirmation of that since the rumor first surfaced early this summer.  Here’s the report from THR about the latest cast announcement.

“Branagh is doing double duty by also starring as detective Hercule Poirot and leads a cast that includes Johnny Depp, who will play Ratchett, the man who is murdered; Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr., who is playing Dr. Arbuthnot; and Tom Bateman, who will play the Frenchman Bouc. Lucy Boynton and Derek Jacobi round out the cast.

Pfeiffer will play Mrs. Hubbard, a glamorous and opinionated passenger with a secret.  Ridley will play Mary Debenham, a working-class woman in love with Arbuthnot.  Dench will play Princess Dragomiroff, who hails from Russian royalty, while Pena appears as a Cuban passenger named Marquez.”

Branagh certainly is assembling a lot of talent for this picture.  The original film earned 6 Oscar nominations including a win for supporting actress and a nomination for best actor.  The bar is set pretty high for this remake, but so far everything looks good.  Here’s the synopsis for the original 1974 film:

“Having concluded a case, detective Hercule Poirot (Albert Finney) settles into what he expects will be a relaxing journey home aboard the Orient Express. But when an unpopular billionaire is murdered en route, Poirot takes up the case, and everyone on board the famous train is a suspect. Using an avalanche blocking the tracks to his advantage, Poirot gradually realizes that many of the passengers have revenge as a motive, and he begins to home in on the culprit.”
