Some news has arrived online concerning Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy including news about how the Elders fit into the plot for Vol. 2, Chris Pratt’s role in Avengers: Infinity Wars and the first footage of the Guardians ride in Disney’s California theme park.
::Edit:: Director James Gunn has since shot down the idea that the Elders will play a critical role in the next movie on with Twitter account. Still, since this report was heavily circulating online the past 24 hours I’ll keep the initial report up as a rumor.:: The first piece of info coming from Schmoes Know is regarding a group of characters from the comics known as the Elders. As explained below, the Elders are ancient beings who are each the last of their race. Some of these characters have already been introduced (Benicio Del Toro as the Collector) or will be appearing in other films (Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster) and it will be interesting to see how/if the other Elders factor into the story in GotG Vol. 2 and the other films leading up to and including Infinity Wars. Here’s the report from Schmoes Know.
“Well, we can now confirm that The Elders do indeed play a role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In the current script, they are the impetus for Star-Lord to seek out Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell (interesting note: Ego at one time considered himself an Elder in the comics, though he didn’t technically qualify). There are at least four Elders in the film: The Collector, two unnamed characters played by Sharon Stone and Sylvester Stallone, and Ayesha, played by Elizabeth Debicki. In the comics, Ayesha is not an Elder, but a scientifically created being whose story ties in with Adam Warlock’s (a popular cosmic Marvel character who has yet to make an appearance in the MCU). But, in classic MCU fashion, it appears her character will morph a bit. It is worth speculating that Stallone and Stone’s characters may not be Elders who originated in the comics either, but other characters who have been tweaked a bit to fill the roles required in the film.
We have also been told that The Grandmaster is definitely an Elder, though he appears to be an exiled one, which is why he will appear in Thor: Ragnarok as the Overseer of the Gladiatorial Games on the planet Ragnarok. Whether he appears or is mentioned in Guardians 2 first is uncertain.”
The second piece of info that Schmoes dishes regarding the Guardians is their involvement in Infinity Wars. It’s already been stated that the Guardians of the Galaxy would be appearing in the movie(s) by the Russo Brothers and Vin Diesel, but the report from Schmoes indicates that Chris Pratt’s Star Lord will have a sizable role in the movie.
“We are reporting that Star-Lord will have a sizable role in Infinity War as the Avengers join up with him as they take on a new cosmic threat. We are not sure if the rest of the Guardians are there too or if they’re only joining in on the action for Avengers 4but we do know that Star-Lord will be the first of the Guardians to make an appearance. The scripts are still being written but as of right now Pratt’s Star-Lord looks to be a major player in Infinity War.
Now that he appears to have a much larger role in the Avengers’ next foray, the question now becomes what important part does he play. Perhaps he comes to Earth to warn the Avengers of an impending attack from Thanos or one of his lieutenants, and being that he is originally from Earth he decides to make the journey home. Or maybe the Avengers need to venture out into space to head off a threat and they encounter Quill, who has some vital information or something else that they need.”
It makes sense that the Guardians would be included in the Infinity Wars storyline since they are the only characters to this point who know of Thanos (Gamora is his daughter after all) and they could act as the gateway for the Avengers to learn about the more cosmic elements they’ll likely encounter (Elders, Thanos’ connections, etc.). Plus, as they speculate above, Peter returning to Earth to warn them is a very organic way to bring these two teams together. Personally I can’t wait to see Rocket and Tony Stark meet up for the first time. I’d love to see a scene where Rocket tinkers with Tony’s armor.
The last bit isn’t movie news, but involves the first footage of the new Guardians of the Galaxy themed ride that will open next year in Disney California Adventure. Check it out below.
