Woody Harrelson is in talks to play a mentor in the Han Solo prequel movie.
According to a report from Variety, Woody Harrelson (Hunger Games) is the top choice to play a mentor role in the upcoming stand alone Star Wars movie featuring Han Solo. The movie will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) and is already starring Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!) as Solo, Donald Glover (Community) as Lando Calrissian, and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) in a yet to be revealed role. The movie follow the famed smuggler prior to his encounter with Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan in A New Hope.
Based on a tweet from Borys Kit, Harrelson was not the only big name being considered for the part. Apparently Lucasfilm also looked into casting Christian Bale, best know for playing Batman, as the mentor to a young Han Solo. So while the extents of their relationship in the movie is unknown (a mentor was never mentioned in the original trilogy), it appears as though Lucasfilm was taking a similar route as with A New Hope where they cast relatively unknown actors in the leads but put an establish, respectable star with some clout in a key role. Here’s the tweet:
Harrelson is one of those stars who elevates everything he’s in. Whether it’s a similar role as a mentor in Hunger Games or his return to TV with True Detectives, he consistently puts in quality work. Personally, while I like Bale I think Harrelson would do a better job in a “mentor” role so I’m glad they decided to go in that direction. Still, the report states that talks are in the early stages so anything can happen. Filming is expected to begin in February for a December 13, 2018 release date.
