Mel Gibson among directors being pursued for Suicide Squad 2.
In a very surprising turn, The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Warner Bros. is in talks with Academy Award-winner Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge, Braveheart) to direct Suicide Squad 2. Gibson has always been a well-respected director, but has fallen out of public favor following anti-Semitic comments and a drunk driving arrest. The DC films have received mixed reviews thus far (while still being highly profitable), so one would expect the studio to take the safe route. While Gibson is a talented director who is a hot commodity coming off an Oscar nomination for Hacksaw Ridge, it is still unexpected that Warner Bros. would look to him to direct a movie they’re hoping will help turn the tide of public reception towards their shared universe.
Here’s the official report from THR:
“Warner Bros. is courting the actor-director to helm Suicide Squad 2 and the sides are early in talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. No official offer has been made nor has any commitment. Sources say that Gibson is familiarizing himself with the material.”
At a screening of Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson was asked about these talks and stated that he and the studio are in the “Kind of a first date” phase of discussing the project (via Batman-News). Is there a chance that we could get a Mel Gibson-directed Suicide Squad project? Is Gibson simply playing nice with Warner Bros. to get back in the good graces of blockbuster film studios? Either way it is an interesting story.
According to Variety, Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), and Jonathan Levine (50/50) are also in contention for the gig. David Ayes, who directed the first film, will be directing Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn in another DC Comics film, Gotham City Sirens (with rumors of Haley Bennett potentially in contention for the role of Catwoman… or courting the role).
What do you think about the potential options to direct Suicide Squad 2? Suicide Squad is the film believed to be taking the November 1, 2019 DC/Warner Bros. release date. I will keep you posted as soon as I learn any additional information about this project.
