Margot Robbie To Play Marian in Robin Hood Drama

Margot Robbie will star in Marian, a Sony film focusing on the maiden of the Robin Hood folklore.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad) has signed on to star and produce Marian.  Marian will be one of many recent Robin Hood projects, however this one differs in how the traditional damsel in distress will be taking on the mantle of the hero.  Here’s the report from THR:

“Marian unfolds after the death of Robin Hood, the love of her life. The titular maiden then picks up his cause to lead her people into a pivotal war that will not only decide the fate of the kingdom, but also see her don the mantle of the man she loved. In the process, she rises as a legend herself.”

I have no issues with the concept or with Robbie in the role, but Robin Hood is a character/property that has been done to death.  The Russell Crowe version came out in 2010 and there’s another variation starring Taron Egerton set to arrive in theaters next year (as well as a futuristic take and a TV series in the works).  There’s few properties that have been remade as often as Robin Hood, and that deflates any excitement for this movie.  I would typically say that the movie has weak box office prospects, but there aren’t many stars currently as bankable as Robbie.  That gives this project a leg up on the Egerton film, even though that one comes out first.

What do you think about the prospect of seeing a film following Maid Marian taking on the mantle of her fallen lover?  Do you feel that Margot Robbie is right for the role?  There’s no release date yet for this film, but I will keep you up to date on any new information that’s released for this project.
