Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman Frontrunners for Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Reboot/Sequel

On Monday Sony Pictures announced that they would be moving forward with a new Girl With The Dragon Tattoo reboot.  Now it is believed that Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman are the frontrunners for the role of Lisbeth Salander.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Johansson (Avengers, Ghost In The Shell) and Portman (Thor, Jackie) are in talks for the lead since both actresses were in contention for the role in the 2011 American remake.  Here is the official report from Variety:

According to insiders, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, who costarred in 2008’s “The Other Boleyn Girl,” are among the actresses in the mix to play Lisbeth Salander as Alvarez begins meeting with talent. Johansson vied for the role that eventually went to Rooney Mara in the first film. However, that was due, in part, to director David Fincher’s involvement, so it’s unclear if the interest level is still as high.

The soft reboot will be directed by Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) from a screenplay by Steven Knight and Alvarez & Jay Basu.  The sequel/reboot will be an adaptation of the book titled “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”, the fourth in the series and only one to be adapted in English first.

Here;s what Alvarez had to say:

“I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity,” Alvarez said. “Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part — finding our Lisbeth.”
