Henry Cavill is joining the cast of Mission Impossible 6.
Per a report from Variety, Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.) will be returning to the spy genre alongside Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 6. Cavill and Cruise will be joined by returning stars Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, and Jeremy Renner although it’s unknown in what capacity. Earlier this month it was also reported that Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) would be joining the cast in an unspecified role (although it is rumored that her role would be similar in magnitude as Ferguson’s role in Rogue Nation). Here’s the report from Variety:
“Plot details are still under wraps but sources say Cavill would play some sort of a right hand to the head of Cruise’s unit. Alec Baldwin played the role of Cruise’s boss in “Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation” but it is unknown if he will return as the part has been replaced with a new actor (Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Fishburne, Tom Wilkinson) in previous installments.”
For those of you who enjoy spy films and have not seen Cavill in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., I strongly suggest you do so (my review here). Cavill was strong in the movie and I’m excited to see him dabble more in the genre. If the initial report is correct, it looks like he’ll be heading up the IMF unit and therefore won’t get much work in the field. That would be too bad, but he’s still a welcome addition to the franchise.
Cavill’s initial casting broke through director Christopher McQuarrie’s Instagram account. He shared the following post and subsequently carried on a conversation with Cavill in the comments.
Random note, Tom Cruise was the actor initially tied to the role of Napoleon Solo in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. before having to bow out due to a schedule conflict with Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. This allowed Cavill to get the part (performing well in a film that didn’t do well at the box office) and opened the door for him to join another spy film alongside Cruise. Funny how some things come full circle.
