Michael Shannon Latest Frontrunner for Cable in Deadpool 2

Michael Shannon is rumored to be the latest star in the running for the role of Cable in Deadpool 2.

Ever since Deadpool himself announced that Cable would be making an appearance in the sequel during the end credit sequence of the first film, rumors have been circling about numerous stars potentially wearing the eye patch.  High profile names like Stephen Lang, Pierce Brosnan, Russell Crowe and Stranger Things’ David Harbour have all been discussed as possibilities for the famed time-traveller.  According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Fox has a new frontrunner for the coveted role in Michael Shannon (Man of Steel, Nocturnal Animals).  Here’s the THR report:

“Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner for the much-buzzed about Deadpool 2 role of Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Sources say that Shannon isn’t the only one on the studio’s list but is leading the pack as the top choice at this stage. Stranger Things actor David Harbour is also on the shortlist. Kyle Chandler’s name surfaced last summer but sources say he was never in contention for the role.”

I’ll be honest, Shannon never crossed my mind for the part but he could certainly do it justice.  He has already appeared in several comic book movies including Man of Steel, Jonah Hex and a small role in Batman v Superman, but this is a different animal entirely.  Cable may be serious and tough, but he’ll also need to be a straight man (in comedy terms) that can play alongside Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth.  Easier said then done.  Whoever it is that takes on the role will not only be in Deadpool 2, but also an X-Factor movie that’s in the works.  I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear the official word on casting.
