Despite many reports to the contrary, it appears as though Daniel Craig may be open to returning to the role of James Bond for the 25th installment of the franchise. Check out the details below.
Is it possible that Daniel Craig could return for another Bond film? Shortly following the completion of filming on Spectre that seemed impossible when he famously stated in an interview that he’d rather “slash his wrists” than played the famed secret agent again. He even reportedly turned down $150 million for two more 007 movies. That lead to widespread internet speculation about who could adorn the tuxedo in the next Bond installment, with names ranging from Idris Elba to Tom Hiddleston, from Michael Fassbender to Tom Hardy. I even wrote a long-winded post about where the franchise could go from here. Has anything changed since then?
The reasons why Craig was no longer interested in the role were reportedly due to multiple reasons including the amount of work required to get his body in shape physically to look the part and perform the fight choreography/stunt work, exhaustion from the shooting schedule and physical demand of an action movie at his age, the knee injury he sustained during filming of a Spectre fight scene, and presumably because he’s currently 48. Could the time off since completing Spectre change his mind? Possibly, but according to Page Six there could be another reason.
Multiple sources tell Page Six that Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli has “just about persuaded Daniel Craig to do one more Bond movie.” This comes after Broccoli produced his hit off-Broadway production of “Othello” with David Oyelowo, which won Craig the serious acting plaudits he craved.
A Hollywood source said, “Daniel was very pleased with how ‘Othello’ went and the great reviews. Now Daniel’s talks with Barbara are going in the right direction. They have a script — screenwriting duo Neal Purvis and Robert Wade [who’ve penned several Bond movies] are writing and they’ll go into production as soon as Daniel is ready to commit.”
The source added, “Plus, Barbara Broccoli doesn’t like Tom Hiddleston, he’s a bit too smug and not tough enough to play James Bond.”
So you’re telling me there’s a chance. To be honest, I wasn’t a fan of Spectre. There were things to like such as Christoph Waltz’ Blofeld and Dave Bautista’s henchman, but on the whole I felt that the necessity to tie everything to the previous films and Bond as a character made Bond’s world feel smaller and took away from Blofeld as a major threat. Craig himself has done a fantastic job as Bond and would be welcome for one last swan song even despite him being a bit old for the role. Hopefully with a new director (Christopher Nolan please) Bond 25 can be up there with Casino Royale and Skyfall.
What do you think? Are you open to Craig returning as James Bond or are you ready to see someone else take a crack at the character?
