D23: What We Learned About Marvel’s Infinity War

One of the most anticipated movies in geekdom is Marvel’s Infinity War.  For those who are unaware, Infinity War is the culmination of all the Marvel movies so far much the same way that the first Avengers movie was an exclamation point at the end of Phase 1 tying all the movies to that point together.  This movie will feature every hero (both earthbound and the Guardians of the Galaxy) banding together to take on the biggest threat yet, Thanos.  To date this is all we knew about the movie, but following D23, the Disney expo, we now have a few movie details about the film.  Check it out below.

For starters, it was assumed that Thanos would not be alone in his attempted conquest but now we have an idea of what villains will be joining him.  His “team” is known as the Black Order and consists of Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, Black Dwarf/Cull Obsidian, and Ebony Maw.  Here’s a quick summary of each character per Collider:

Corvus:

Corvus is, originally, by far the most loyal to his master Thanos and is actually married to Proxima Midnight.  He is essentially Thanos’ right hand man, normally visiting planets and telling them that they must offer a tribute to the Mad Titan in order to stay in the land of the living.  Corvus Glaive has your usual enhanced strength, speed, agility and so on, but also is essentially immortal, only able to be killed when his staff is destroyed. If Corvus’ body is destroyed, he will eventually regenerate, but if his staff kicks the bucket, so does he.

Proxima Midnight

Midnight acts as more of an enforcer to Thanos than Glaive, going toe to toe successfully with the likes of Thor and the Hulk to name a few. Much like her husband, Proxima has enhanced strength, speed, and agility though her staff also has a nice number of benefits that she uses to her advantage.  Also, her staff is able to shoot out three “heat seeking beams” that can essentially destroy nearly anything that they touch.

Black Dwarf/Cull Obsidian

The bruiser of the Black Order, Black Dwarf is a monster on the same level as the Hulk, towering over the competition with his hideous form. In the upcoming film, they’ve changed his name from Black Dwarf to Cull Obsidian.

Ebony Maw

Perhaps the most enigmatic member of the Black Order, Ebony Maw doesn’t so much as obey Thanos as he does happen to align with some of his ideas. Maw is the sorcerer/manipulator of the team, using his abilities to even manage to hold Doctor Strange under his sway for a time.

D23 provided the first look at the Black Order as well as a better look at how Thanos will appear in the film.  Check out the figures that were on display at the event showcasing (from left to right) Corvus, Proxima Midnight, Thanos, Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian.

AVENGERS: EVENT & SIGNING

Here’s a closeup look at Thanos, the Mad Titan himself.

While not a D23 revelation, there has been speculation across the internet following the event that there may be a connection between one of the members of the Black Order and a Guardian of the Galaxy.  This is a potential spoiler so if you don’t want the surprise ruined (particularly since this differs from the comics) then I suggest you skip this paragraph……. Still with me…. OK moving on.  The twist is with regards to the backstory of Proxima Midnight.  In the comics she’s a bit of a blank slate, which gives writers of the film a chance to create one for her.  The rumors circling the web indicate that Proxima Midnight could be the daughter of Drax, believed to have been killed by Ronan.  Here’s the report from CBR.com:

When Drax first faced Ronan in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, The Accuser didn’t even recall killing Drax’s family. Later, when they would face again, Ronan would say that he had been mistaken, that he did in fact remember killing them. But Ronan could easily have been lying either time in order to torment Drax further, but if he doesn’t actually remember killing Hovat and Kamaria, it’s entirely possible that at least one of them made it out alive. Kamaria could then have been found by Thanos, who would have adopted her, to corrupt and change and mold her into his very own soldier.  it’s entirely possible that Drax’s major character development was being saved for Avengers: Infinity War. If he were to face the fact that his daughter is alive but corrupted by Thanos, it could send him in a downward spiral, a murderous rage. Such an unexpected link to a member of Thanos’ Black Order could have quite the shocking effect not only on the Guardians, but on the audience as well, and this could only work to further complicate the story going forward.

In addition to the revelation of the Black Order teaming up with Thanos against the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Marvel’s other heroes, D23 also introduced a trailer for Infinity War.  The footage shown at D23 is not yet available online, but below you can check out the cast panel and trailer intro as well as a description of the footage shown courtesy of Coming Soon.

“The Guardians are arriving somewhere on the Milano. Star-Lord says that they need to be careful and that everyone should wear their mean faces. A body slams against the front of the milano. It’s Thor! Mantis wakes him up. ‘Who the hell are you guys?’ he asks.”

“Loki is presenting Thanos the tesseract! Spider-Man is on a school bus. ‘Death follows him like a shadow,” says someone of Thanos… We see the Collector’s lair destroyed. Gamora is in it, crying.”

“Fun isn’t something you consider when trying to balance the universe,” Thanos says, “But this does put a smile on my face!”

LOTS of Avengers fighting! The Hulkbuster is back! Spider-Man in his Avengers costume! A giant battle with Thanos on an utterly-decimated landscape. He’s able to reach out his arm and call down flaming comets from the heavens. Dr. Strange is on the battlefield. Iron Man is with Mantis. It looks massive!
Sounds awesome right.  I’m not sure when we’ll finally get to see this footage, or any trailer/footage from Infinity War for that matter, but Disney/Marvel has tended to be rather secretive when it comes to the material they show at events.  Perhaps we’ll have to wait until Thor: Ragnarok is released in November.

What do you think about the introduction to Thanos’ evil team, the Black Order, and the description of the first footage released for the film?  Share your thoughts in the discussion board below.  Infinity War arrives in theaters May 4, 2018.
