Other than stating there will be 4 Avatar sequels and that the release date has been delayed again from the announced December 2018 date, not much has been revealed regarding the story of the future Avatar films. However, in an interview with Empire (via Coming Soon), writer-director James Cameron stated that we’ll see the return of Stephen Lang’s Colonel Miles Quaritch as the main villain across the full 4 films.
“The interesting conceit of the ‘Avatar’ sequels is it’s pretty much the same characters. There are new characters and a lot of new settings and creatures, so I’m taking characters you know and putting them in unfamiliar places and moving them on this greater journey. But it’s not a whole bunch of new characters every time. There’s not a new villain every time, which is interesting. Same guy. Same motherf*cker through all four movies. He is so good and he just gets better. I know Stephen Lang is gonna knock this out of the park.”
So how will he return? It seemed pretty clear that Colonel Quaritch died at the conclusion of the first film. Speculation in the article ranges from body/mind being collected by the Selfridge and rebuilt into a machine to him finding a way to transpose himself into a Na’vi body. I’m curious to see what Cameron does with the story to make Quaritch’s return, as well as the confirmed returns of Matt Gerald‘s Corporal Lyle Wainfleet and Sigourney Weaver’s Dr. Grace Augustine, make sense and not simply a cop-out way to bring back well known and well liked characters.
These sequels will be intriguing at the very least. I’ve said all along that even though I enjoyed Avatar, proposing 4 more films to be shot back to back is a risky proposition. There was no doubt a sequel would be made as the original remain the top grossing movie at the worldwide box office by a large margin even 8 years later, but much of the hype has dissipated since its release and 3D (particularly iMax 3D) isn’t the novelty it was at the time so it’s impossible to think these sequels will perform nearly as well. That said, this is James Cameron and he’s responsible for the 2 biggest movies of all time so I’d never bet against him.
