Gareth Evans is in talks to direct a Deathstroke movie that will exist within the DC cinematic universe.
The Wrap broke the story that Gareth Evans, director of The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2 (two excellent action movies you need to check out if you don’t mind subtitles), will be directing a movie focusing on the popular DC villain. Joe Manganiello (Magic Mike, True Blood) is attached to star. Deathstroke was previously expected to appear in Justice League (in theaters next month) following a a tweet from Ben Affleck of Manganiello in costume while shooting on set. It is unknown whether he made the final cut of the film, which reportedly has a greatly reduced runtime after Joss Whedon took over the editing process of the film when Zack Snyder had to step down. Deathstroke/Slade Wilson was also announced by Affleck to be the main antagonist in the solo Batman movie, but that production is in a state of flux following first Affleck and then Matt Reeves departing the director’s chair.
Here’s a brief summary of the character courtesy of Coming Soon:
“Created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez, Deathstroke is a famous mercenary in the world of DC Comics who has gone toe-to-toe with the Dark Knight on multiple occasions and actually beaten him in hand-to-hand combat more than once. A masterful assassin who has enhanced reflexes and strength, Deathstroke remains one of the most deadly people in the DCU despite being an old man.”
Deathstroke has been on both sides of the law in the comics, typically portrayed as a villain and hired assassin but has also acted as more of an anti-hero at times with stories more similar to Marvel’s The Punisher fighting against mob bosses and the like. There’s no word yet on which version of Slade Wilson will appear in the film. The one thing we can be assured of is the action sequences will be incredible with Evans helming the project. Hopefully he’ll find some roles for Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian and Evans’ other frequent collaborators.
