Lucasfilm announced Rian Johnson will write/direct a new Star Wars trilogy outside of the Skywalker trilogy.
In case there was any doubt that Rian Johnson has directed a film Lucasfilm is happy with, they have officially announced that The Last Jedi director will be developing a brand new Star Wars trilogy. This is especially significant because Lucasfilm has had issues with creative differences with some directors brought on to direct some of their anthology films since Disney acquired Lucasfilm. Phil Lord and Chris Miller parted ways with the Han Solo project before Ron Howard took over and Josh Trank was infamously let go from an unnamed project back in 2015. So Lucasfilm finding someone they trust in the film-making process (and they’re clearly happy with The Last Jedi’s finished product) can’t be undersold.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy provided the following statement courtesy of ScreenRant:
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and longtime collaborator Ram Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
Nothing is known at this time regarding the nature of this new trilogy apart from that fact it will exist outside the Skywalker Saga and will star new and original characters “from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored.” When Disney first purchased Lucasfilm, the thing I was most excited for (in addition to knowing that we’ll actually be getting more Star Wars movies) is getting the chance to see new and exciting adventures within this universe. One of the great things about Star Wars is that is feels like such a dense and expansive universe with so much going on outside of the action we’re currently watching. It’s felt like a missed opportunity thus far to only develop movies that have continued the Skywalker Saga or followed preexisting characters or storylines. This will be the first time a writer-director will be given the reigns to start from scratch and tell whatever story he/she wants to within this world.
Are you excited about the prospect of Rian Johnson writing/directing a new Star Wars trilogy? What type of stories would you be interested in seeing (bounty hunters, knights of the old republic, some expanded universe material, or something completely different)? Does this set your expectations even higher for The Last Jedi? Share your thoughts in the discussion board below. Star Wars the Last Jedi arrives in theaters December 15, 2017. There are no release dates set for the new trilogy at this time but I will keep you updated about any new information as it breaks.
