Robert Downey, Jr. has revealed the cast for his film Voyage of Doctor Dolittle on his social media pages. Check it out below.
Robert Downey, Jr. will play the titular doctor who can speak to animals. The previously announced cast includes Emma Thompson as Polynesia the parrot, Selena Gomez as Betsy the giraffe, Tom Holland as Jip the dog, and Ralph Fiennes as Barry the tiger. Additional cast members revealed through RDJ’s announcement (via Coming Soon) include Rami Malek as Chee-Chee the gorilla, Octavia Spencer as Dab-Dab the duck, Kumail Nanjiani as Plimpton the ostrich, John Cena as Yoshi the Polar Bear, Marion Cotillard as Tutu the fox, Carmen Ejogo as Regine the Lioness, with Craig Robinson as Fleming the mouse, and Frances de la Tour.
The Doctor Dolittle novel series by Hugh Lofting has been previously adapted for the big screen in a 1967 musical (which received 9 Academy Award nominations despite poor critical reception and only a 32% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and in the 1998 Eddie Murphy vehicle which borrowed the name and concept of a doctor talking to animals, but very little else from the books. This film has several respectable actors on board (pun intended… voyage of… oh nevermind) so my assumption is that this film will lean more towards being a faithful and likely more serious adaptation than the Eddie Murphy version.
