We’re About to Get More Ghostbuster Films Than We Initially Expected

“Shared Universes” appear to be all the rage these days since Avengers pulled off the impossible by using separate movies to build to one mammoth event.  The cross-over between the films at this blockbuster scale is something that hasn’t been accomplished before.  Since their success, other studios such as Universal with their classic movie monsters and Warner Brothers with DC’s Justice League have attempted to copy Marvel’s formula in hopes of replicating their success.  The latest to join the fray is the Ghostbuster franchise.  The long-gestating Ghostbuster sequel/reboot/spin-off finally began to take form with the Paul Feig lead movie starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon set to come out July 2016.  So Ghostbuster fans, myself included, likely assumed that was the end of the story and any future iteration with the original cast officially received the kibosh.

Not so fast.  As Latino Review reported, producer Ivan Reitman stated, “We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment.  My primary focus will be to build the Ghostbusters into the universe it always promised it might become. The original film is beloved, as is the cast, and we hope to create films we will continue to love.”  Staying true to this, Sony created a production team that will oversee the Ghostbuster shared universe, called GhostCorps.

“This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come.  The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew [Pearce] (Iron Man 3) will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”  Second film?  Russo Brothers?  A while back there were rumors that Channing Tatum (21 Jump Street) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) were actively pushing for involvement in a Ghostbuster film that would be produced by Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier).  Then just last week the Russos signed a three-year first-look deal with Sony.

Devin Faraci over at reports the following, “The plan is to have this new Ghostbusters universe feel big and have the kind of tonal variety that allows there to be a legitimate shared universe, not just a whole bunch of franchises running in tandem. What’s more, the hope is that after Feig’s Ghostbusters is out and after Tatum’s Ghostsbusters is out the next film will see the two teams co-mingling, Avengers-style. This is planned out, and has been getting planned out for some time – it’s not a sudden change of heart at Sony. The idea is that this shared universe will allow Feig to do his thing, Reitman and the Russos and Drew Pearce to do their thing, and for them  to cross over when they must.”  So that’s three new Ghostbuster flicks currently in the works; the all-female cast, the Channing Tatum/Russo Brothers film and a team-up.  No word yet on whether any of the original cast members will be making an appearance in these future films, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility.  Here’s hoping that Bill Murray gets over his ill feelings towards Ghostbusters II and agrees to be involved in the movies in some capacity.  I mean, who doesn’t want to see Venkman return?  Thanks for reading.

Zoolander 2 Officially in the Works

Was that Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson at Paris Fashion Week?  In quite possibly the most epic way to break the news, Stiller and Wilson showed up decked out as Derek and Hansel to announce that Zoolander is officially happening.  Check out the video below:

No story or casting information is known as of yet, but stay tuned.  I wonder if he’ll come up with any look that could top Magnum or if they’ll finally construct the Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too.  Thanks for reading.

Not Wrong, Just Different

Chances are you have had a conversation at some point similar to the following: “Have you seen ____?  I loved it so much.”  “You liked that?!  That movie was garbage.  Only an idiot would like something like that.”  Yes?  I know I have.  Many times I’d be the one saying those words.  I was what you could affectionately refer to as a pretentious film jerk.   Continue reading Not Wrong, Just Different

Behind the Scenes – About Me

My name is Jason Schooling and simply put I am a huge fan of movies.  I’ve decided to write this blog not because I have any background in writing (which I hope is not painfully obvious with each post) or in the entertainment industry, but because I am truly passionate about movies and love discussing film any opportunity I get.  So to help preserve my marriage by not talking my wife’s ear off, I instead opted to pursue an alternative outlet.  Ergo, a blog.
