D23: Live Action Aladdin Casts Jasmine, Aladdin and Genie

More from D23.  Disney has been on a tear lately with their live action adaptations of their animated classic films.  Beauty and the Beast is 2017’s highest grossing movie this year banking $504 million domestically and $1.261 billion worldwide to date.  With quite a few other live action movies in various stages of development, the one we learned more about during the D23 Disney expo is Aladdin.  Find out who is cast in the lead roles for the adaptation below.

According to a report from Variety the cast for Aladdin will consist of Naomi Scott (Power Rangers) as Jasmine, newcomer Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Will Smith (Bright, Suicide Squad) as the Genie.  The movie also features Guy Ritchie (King Arthur, Man From U.N.C.L.E.) directing from a screenplay John August (Big Fish).

Two things that will undoubtedly be talked about ad nauseam following this announcement are Disney not casting an Arab in the role of Jasmine (Hollywood’s whitewashing of roles has become a heated topic online particularly after the recent movies Gods of Egypt and Ghost in the Shell) as well as Will Smith being cast as the Genie.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Smith is a bad choice for the Genie, but it is impossible to cast the character without everyone making the comparison to Robin Williams’ portrayal of the iconic role.  Will Smith is not known for character voices the same way Williams was, so it will be interesting to see how different the Genie character could end up being in this movie.  It is believed that the songs from the original will remain in tact, so if that’s the case we;ll at least be seeing Smith sing “Friend In Me”.  However, with Ritchie attached this will no doubt be more of a highly energized, con man/street level take on the story with likely only small douses of the supernatural.
