Alicia Vikander to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider Reboot

The Hollywood Reporter just broke the news that Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) will be playing Lara Craft in the reboot of Tomb Raider.  The news comes as a bit of a surprise since all early reports pointed to Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley circling the role.  Continue reading below for more details. Tomb Raider Reboot Finds Director and Screenwriter

Lara Croft has recently been reinvented for video game consoles with her gritty 2013 reboot and the just released sequel.  Along with the new games came rumors of a film reboot as well.  The project has been passed around to screenwriters like Mark Fergus and Hawk Osby (Iron Man), Marti Noxon (Fright Night), and most recently Evan Daugherty (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) in the past five years.  Now not only is there word of a new screenwriter coming on board, but the first director is attached.  Here’s the report from Screen Rant. Here are the Frontrunners to Direct the Tomb Raider Reboot

I have no idea whether films based on video games will become as big of a money maker as films based on books, television shows or comics (although I did write a post here where I speculated that it’d be the next medium to be mined for stories), but Hollywood has certainly been investing resources into video game adaptations in recent weeks.  In addition to some of the big movies coming out next year like Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed and Angry Birds, adaptations of Borderlands and Mega Man have been greenlit with Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted and Mass Effect in various stages of development by Avi Arad.  I also wrote a post not too long ago where Nintendo stated they were changing their stance on developing their characters for the big screen.  Here’s some more news on the video game adaptation front and it has to do with a reboot to the Tomb Raider franchise.
